Last month at Build 2017, Microsoft announced that OneDrive Placeholders are finally back. Now it has a new name ‘OneDrive Files On-Demand‘.
It is now available for Windows Insiders on Fast Ring. The public release of this feature will be with the release of Windows 10 Fall Creators Update.
How does it works?
Well OneDrive Files On-Demand works in the same way as OneDrive Placeholders did. Once signed into the account, OneDrive will show all the files present on it in the File Explorer. But it won’t download them until the user open it, this will also help in saving a huge space on the machines.
Since some of the users do not want to keep their files online and want to access them offline whenever they want, they can select the option ‘Always keep on this device’. This will help them to download only a specific file or folder. With this a user can access them while there is no connection.
Sometimes a file doesn’t get downloaded due to some error or some other issues. To avoid this and to know whether the file or folder is downloaded or not, user can check the status of that file/folder.
OneDrive Files On-Demand is now rolling out for the users on Fast Ring Windows Insiders. If you are not an Insider, then wait till this September for the launch of Windows 10 Fall Creators Update to get your hands on with this new feature.
