Windows Phone presumed to be already killed by Microsoft long ago as the market share of the devices is negligible was stopped being supported on July 11th 2017 officially by Microsoft.

What does this mean?

As mentioned on Wikipedia,

End-of-life” (EOL) is a term used with respect to a product supplied to customers, indicating that the product is in the end of its useful life (from the vendor’s point of view), and a vendor stops marketing, selling, or rework sustaining it. (The vendor may simply intend to limit or end support for the product.) In the specific case of product sales, a vendor may employ the more specific term “end-of-sale” (EOS). The time-frame after the last production date depends on the product and relates to the expected product lifetime from a customer’s point of view. In case of Mobile Phone, the Lifespan is of 3 Years.

Now, as mentioned on Microsoft’s support page :

End of support refers to the date when Microsoft no longer provides automatic fixes, updates, or online technical assistance. This is the time to make sure you have the latest available update or service pack installed. Without Microsoft support, you will no longer receive security updates that can help protect your PC from harmful viruses, spyware, and other malicious software that can steal your personal information.

You can read more about Windows lifecycle here .

Deriving a conclusion from this, I am clear and confident to say that You can still use Windows Phone 8.1 or other unsupported software from Microsoft . But your device will be vulnerable to latest threats and malicious attacks .

Here are some short points on what will happen to your device now :

  • You won’t get any updates .
  • You might not be able to run newer software or applications .
  • Your device might be vulnerable to threats .
  • You may stop getting customer support assistance from the OEM .

Now what about Windows 10 Mobile?

Windows 10 Mobile is the next iteration in the story of Windows phone . The development of Windows 10 was kind of a new in Microsoft’s culture . The introduction of Windows Insiders Program gave Microsoft a new direction towards success after disastrous reports of Windows 8 . Under the Windows Insiders Program, MS Fans, IT Pros and Tech enthusiasts were allowed to test the prerelease software (Windows 10) as Microsoft was building it internally . This is how the latest offerings we provided to the tester .

Now, after the Anniversary update for Windows 10 Mobile was released to Public in August 2016, there were not much features added for the Creators Update which rolled out in April 2017 and after that only bug fixes were released to Mobile phones under the Windows Insiders Program from a different branch from the Mainstream branch called feature2 .

People have claimed that this migration of a different branch is all about Killing Windows Phone strategies and on the other hand, Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella has also mentioned the Ultimate Mobile Device which they have been working on famously known as the Surface Phone .

The conclusion about Windows 10 Mobile :

Windows 10 Mobile is NOT dead .Microsoft is internally gearing up for the next super major shell for Mobile Devices codenamed CShell . Clearly, your current device will most probably not support the new CShell . But new devices will be filled in the market shelves to provide a greater and newer experiences .
